Dukie's Personality:
Dukie is a long time resident here at ACS. Once he gets to know you he is very affectionate and easy going. Even though he is a smaller dog he does not wish to be picked up. He would love to sit beside you on the floor. Dukie loves his toys very much and will guard them from other people or animals. He however does do well with other dogs his size if they do not bother him too much.
Requirements:
The adopter must understand Dukie’s advanced resource guarding and understand how to work with this behavior. A minimum of 6 visits to the shelter is required where you will spend time with him, the staff who works the closest with him, and the Director of Enrichment and Behavior and/or our Behaviorist. This requirement is important to ensure that Dukie has the safest and most successful adoption possible. Dukie’s resource guarding extends to his area’s and toys, food, or anything he feels is his. It is crucial to understand the correct way of handling this behavior to avoid his aggression over novelty items. Dukie will need continued behavior modification which could ultimately help him learn to feel comfortable with having people around his favorite items.
